Opportunity brings smiles

Our Mission

Dr. Geoffrey Griffin (1933-2005), founder of the Starehe Boys’ Center and School often reminded his students that one is remembered for what they completed, not what they started. In 1959, Dr. Griffin started a dream and wonder – The Starehe Boys’ Center and School (SBC) – that has shaped the lives of tens of thousands of persons who are now making a difference across the world. While Dr. Griffin lived to his axiom by completing what he started, the need to transform more brilliant youth, who will in turn, impact the world, is even more desperate in Kenya today. His foresight and vision led to the establishment of the Starehe Girls’ Center (SGC). The Starehe vision and Dr. Griffin’s dreams continue to inspire us to date.

One of these inspirations is the alumni-led Starehe Foundation. The Starehe Foundation is a 501 (c) (3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to leverage financial, material and human resources that sustain the Starehe schools. The Starehe Foundation is about sustaining the completed works of Dr. Griffin by Starehe alumni and friends. We invite you to join us in this mission!

Our Vision

The vision of the Starehe Foundation is to establish the Starehe Schools as the leading institutions of secondary education in Africa for disadvantaged youth.

Our Approach

To achieve our visions and fulfill our mission, we use a four pronged approach. These include: 1) People, 2) Partnerships, 3) Purpose and 4) Process.

  1. People – our goal is the transformation of people, boys and girls. We do this by reaching to other people, including alumni, private donors, private entities, and all well-wishers from across the world to provide funding or volunteer time to the Starehe schools.
  2. Partnerships – given the enormous and bold vision of the Foundation, we
recognize that existing and new partnerships are necessary in building and sustaining the Starehe schools. Our impact will be collective.
  3. Purpose – Starting with the “why” enables the Starehe Foundation to understand the context and environment in which our mission will be realized. We will always get back to our mission to remind ourselves why we exist. Our purpose is transformation for all boys and girls who go through the Starehe schools.
  4. Process – We are committed to a transparent, honest, and ethical process in dealing with people, partnerships and purpose. In honor of Dr. Griffin and true to the values we received at Starehe, we commit to the highest levels of financial fiduciary and organizational management. Our outcomes (mission and vision) are as important as our way of doing business.
