About The Starehe Foundation
The Starehe Foundation is a U.S.-registered 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the secondary education of deserving youth at Starehe Boys’ Centre & School and Starehe Girls’ Centre & School in Nairobi, Kenya. Founded in 2015, the Foundation mobilizes alumni, partners, and friends around the world so that bright students—regardless of financial background—can access, remain in, and complete a life-transforming Starehe education.
Our Story: Inspired By Starehe,Rooted In Service
Starehe Boys’ Centre & School was founded in 1959 by Dr. Geoffrey William Griffin as a residential rescue facility providing care, stability, and dignity to vulnerable boys in Nairobi. It has grown into one of Kenya’s most respected national schools, known for discipline, academic excellence, leadership, and service. Starehe Girls’ Centre, established in 2000, extends this mission to young women. The school offers a nurturing environment where talented girls from disadvantaged backgrounds can thrive.
The name “Starehe”, from Kiswahili, means tranquility, peace, or comfort—a reminder of the founders’ vision to provide hope and opportunity where it is needed most. Starehe Boys’ is also among a select group of Sub-Saharan African schools that belong to Round Square, an international network of more than 200 schools across 50 countries, offering world-class leadership, service, and global engagement programs. Generations of alumni have gone on to lead in business, academia, public service, and civil society—carrying forward values of humility, excellence, discipline, and service. The Starehe Foundation exists to extend this legacy to the next generation.

We identify students with demonstrated need, vet sponsorship requests, and channel support through accountable, transparent systems. Our governance, financial controls, and privacy practices ensure integrity at every step—and we report impact back to our donors and partners.

Management Team
The brain behind all things donor engagement. Among the pioneer group of Starehe Girls' Centre and now an advocate for the plight of women around the world.
Hellen Kimaru
Operations Coordinator
Hellen is our local contact in Kenya. She oversees the operations side of the foundation supporting both Starehe Schools and is often our representative who shows up for events and meetings that need to occur in Kenya.
